MindMatters - Promotion of mental health through education (Germany)

Originally from Australia, MindMatters is a school based programme for the promotion of mental health in secondary schools (Grade 5 – 10). The German language adaptation was developed and pilot tested within a research project under the lead of Prof. Dr. Peter Paulus at the Leuphana University Lueneburg from 2002 to 2006. MindMatters is a setting approach and aims at all persons involved in school such as pupils, school heads and non-teaching staff as well as at affiliated outside the school.

The ETM Network is part of the Every Teacher Matters Project, founded by Suneta Bagri. The project consists of Coaching, Personal Development, Wellbeing Workshops alongside a range of other services, providing wellbeing support to schools and teachers. Launched in 2019.

Mental well-being is important for a productive workforce and a healthy workplace. Our Mental Health Workplace Programmes aim to equip employees and employers with skills and knowledge to take charge of their own mental well-being and to create a supportive environment.
The objective of the Management Training programme is to equip managers and HR personnel with self-care knowledge and skills to be supportive leaders at the workplace. It consists of a 1 day core workplace mental health workshop, and 2 half-day supplementary workshops (optional) to build capacity in the area of workplace mental health and wellbeing. Each workshop is catered for 30 pax* and can be held on-site at companies.

As, following HSE research results, 1 out of 4 people might presumably suffer with mental health difficulties at some point of his/her work life, it is very important to talk about his topic. CRAMS puts a focus on mental illness in this article, and offers a mental health workplan in six stages. NokNok (Belgium)

The Flanders Institute of Healthy Living launched a new tool to increase the mental resilience of adolescents (NokNok). Using a combination of online coaching, mental health tips, and exercises, it motivates and stimulates adolescents to strengthen their mental wellbeing and resilience. On this newly developed interactive coaching platform, adolescents learn how to cope with stressors, to improve their self-confidence and to develop a positive vision on life. The tool is easily accessible and young people can use it on their own pace.

Upsi is a comic character, created by the Accident Insurance Berlin to rise awareness for OSH topics in a playful way. Eight books and one radio play have been released until now. This book teaches children how to deal with feelings, for their mental health. Every Kindergarten in Berlin can get this book for free and use it.

ANKe offers preventive and supervisory support for promotion of integral (body, mind and spirit) development of children primarily through the medium of exercise. With this project it was possible to improve the personal health behaviour of the employees, especially older workers. The working conditions became more healthy and there is a demonstrable improvement of the work climate and therewith the motivation of the employees.

3rd Career Revitalisation (Czech Republic)

This programme, developed by EXPERTIS, Prague, is supposed to help elder employees to deal with changes in their life and work environment. This programme has two target groups. Firstly personnel managers and directors are offered an advisory service on how to develop changes in the corporate process which are geared to the 50+, furthermore employees 50+ of the middle management receive a revitalization course.

In the first year basic knowledge in the fields of law, administrative sciences, social policy, pedagogic, psychology, sociology, statistics, public health, social medicine, biology, are taught. Additionally training of competence, orientation towards practical and occupational areas are fields within this studies. In the second year expert knowledge and methods of health promotion, e.g. research methods, judicial and social political basics, economics and management in welfare and public health, organisational development, workplace health promotion are relevant topics.

The Als's Pals package includes a comprehensive curriculum and two days of extensive workshop training for teachers, instructional assistants, administrators, and resource specialists such as education coordinators, guidance counselors, and school psychologists. The training highlights how to integrate Al's Pals into all aspects of daily teaching.

The Buddy Program (Germany)

In this project, younger pupils get a „buddy“ (an older pupil), who accompanies them through their school time and helps them in several ways. Aims of this project are: strengthen social competencies and means of conflict resolution, enhance communication and cooperation of teachers, pupils and parents.

In a European campaign „work. in tune with life. move europe“, the European Network for Workplace Health Promotion (ENWHP) started an initiative to help promote mental health in workplaces. The campaign is co-funded by the European Comission under the Public Health Programme 2003 - 2008.
Under the leadership of the BKK Bundesverband (Federal Association of Company Health Insurance Funds), National Contact Office Germany, the 8th ENWHP pan-European initiative aims to:
· Increase the awareness of companies and the general public about the needs and benefits of mental health promotion at work
· Attract companies to take part in the campaign and to convince them that investments in workplace mental health promotion initiatives are worthwhile.
· Design practical measures and models for promoting mental health in workplace settings and encourage an exchange of experience in this field.
