Swiss National Accident Insurance Fund (SUVA)
Suva is an independent, non-profit company under public law. In 1918, Suva opened its doors as the Swiss Accident Insurance Fund. Suva's business activities are based on the accident insurance law. It mainly insures companies in the secondary business sector, i.e. industrial trading and commercial enterprises.
As the most important carrier of obligatory accident insurance in Switzerland, Suva insures over 1,8 million employees in 109,207 companies against occupational and non-occupational accidents as well as against work-related illnesses. Since 1996, Suva has offered insurance coverage against accidents to all individuals entitled to unemployment compensation.
Suva does not receive any state subsidies. Its revenues consist mainly of the premiums paid by insured persons, of the returns on capital invested to provide pensions, and of recourse claims. Suva is legally obliged to meet its insurance obligations at all times with its investments. Suva’s investment activities therefore aim to maintain value within a long-term time horizon.
Suva's main office is located in Lucerne. Nevertheless, with 19 branch offices hroughout Switzerland, Suva ist never far away from its customers. At the end of 2024, Suva employed 4754 employees..
With its sixteen members from the ranks of employees and the same number representing employers, as well as eight representatives of the Swiss federal government, Suva’s Board of Directors has a distinct emphasis on social partnership.
