Starting in 2015, Germany had to deal with a new challenge for politics and society: the big number of refugees coming to the country from many regions in the world, where war and hardship forces people to leave their home countries.
This development is a challenge for the whole society, and it affects the world of health and safety in a very special way. Not only the growing cultural diversity at workplaces has to be dealt with, but also many aspects of everyday life.One of these is road safety.
The German Road Safety Council released a brochure explaining German traffic rules and proper behaviour, especially for bicycle drivers and for refugees.

asbestos awareness e-learning course

The European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW) was partner in a Lifelong Learning Project “Making the EU AsBestos Clean (ABClean) to create an e-learning course offer together with training providers and institutes for occupational medicine. In many Member States, asbestos related training requirements are often limited to workers in companies specialized in asbestos removal. This leaves out many workers who are at risk of exposure to asbestos, who receive no training on asbestos awareness at all.

A European project to the demographic change
| Bild: | Best Agers is a project in which older professionals worktogether with different age groups in the fields of business and skills development to generate new ideas and share their expertise and experience.
Best Agers is part-financed by the European Union Baltic Sea Region Pro- gramme 2007-2013 (Priority 1 - Fostering of innovations across the Baltic Sea Region).
Nineteen partner institutions from eight countries around the Baltic Sea launched this project: Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden.
With demographic change - recently defined as one of the four key challenges for European regions by the EC - and the current economic crisis looming, the cities and regions of the BSR have to find creative ways of disclosing and utilizing unused opportunities.
Project duration: January 2010 - December 2012.

This project by the Institute for Dermatology, Environmental Medicine and Health Theory, which is part of the Faculty for Human Sciences of the University of Osnabrück is supposed to support the implementation of occupational health and safety standards in hairdressing for the European Union (Declaration of Dresden). In addition SafeHair gives recommendation for the curriculum in vocational training of hairdressers.
Furthermore, a questionnaire (EvaHair) was developed by the University of Osnabrueck to assess the state of the art of current health and safety standards in hairdressing and to evaluate the implementation process of new or modified health and safety standards.

For this project, the German Gesellschaft für Arbeitsschutz- und Humanisierungsforschung (Association for Occupational Safety and Human Research) cooperated with with five companies in the electronics, mechanical engineering and plant engineering industries, all showing high innovation dynamics.
The project was supposed to develop operational prevention concepts to make it easier to work with an aging workforce or with an age-centered, mixed-age workforce.
The aim was to reach a high efficiency up to 65 or 67 years of age to stay healthy up to the retirement leave.

Ergonomics tuition modules for designer training

This is a project providing online and offline learning modules for engineers to increase their knowledge on ergonomics. This project was initiated by KAN (Commission for Occupational Health and Safety and Standardisation), Germany.
During their training, engineers currently receive very little tuition in human engineering. The corresponding topics are adequately included in training only at institutions with human engineering departments. KAN's objective was therefore to facilitate the integration of knowledge from the areas of occupational safety and health and ergonomics into the training of designers, thereby contributing to products, work equipment and workplaces satisfying ergonomics and safety standards.
To achieve this aim, it was considered necessary to create dedicated tuition modules on ergonomics.

"Shattered Lives" is a campaign of the Health and Safety Executive, UK. Nearly 11000 workers suffered serious injury as a result of a slip or trip in the UK last year. Reducing this unnecessary injury toll is a priority. Users are supposed to find out what happens when workers are put at risk and what they can do to stop slips and trips in their workplace. The website, posters and brochures offer examples from five different idustries: Food Retail, Food & Drink Manufacturing, Catering, Building & Plant Maintenance and Construction. For each industry, one worker and the story of his accident is being presented to show what can happen at work.
