There is an indication that across Higher Education (HE) engineering courses in the UK, the extent and content of risk education varies, and is not always commensurate with the level of risk that undergraduates could be responsible for managing in their professional life. Consequently, a project was set up to incorporate risk education into the curriculum of an undergraduate engineering course in a UK university for the 2005/06 academic year.

Early Recognition, Monitoring and Integrated Management of Emerging, New Technology related Risks

iNTeg-Risk is a large-scale integrating project aimed at improving the management of emerging risks, related to “new technologies” in European industry. This is being achieved by building new management paradigm for emerging risks as a set of principles supported by a common language, agreed tools & methods, and Key Performance Indicators, all integrated into a single framework. The project aim is to reduce time-to-market for the lead market EU technologies and promote safety, security, environmental friendliness and social responsibility as a trademark of the EU technologies. The project goal is to improve early recognition and monitoring of emerging risks and decrease reaction times if major accidents involving emerging risks happen.
The project involves leading EU industries and renowned R&D institutions. It is coordinated by the European Virtual Institute for Integrated Risk Management, the dedicated EEIG guaranteeing the sustainability of results after the project.

NetWoRM (Net-based Training for Work- Related Medicine), a project by the Clinical centre of the University of Munich
Institute of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, is a project for the further development and the worldwide dissemination of the web-based virtual patients for Occupational Medicine.
 The aim of the implementation of these virtual patients was to enhance the interest in Occupational Medicine in medical students. Beyond the teaching of theoretical basics they support the clinical aspects of this specific field and the multidisciplinary use of acquired knowledge.

The Dublin Institute of Technology is one of Ireland’s largest and most innovative third-level institutions, with a population of 22,000 students and approximately 2,000 staff members. DIT offers over 300 different programmes from apprenticeship right through to postgraduate level. DIT’s campus sites are currently located in over 40 buildings around the city centre.
Universities and colleges in Ireland have to comply with OSH legislation, which requires them to prevent risks to their own staff and to third parties including students. In assisting the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) to meet its legal obligations, its safety team has sought, at the same time, to promote a safety culture among students with the aim that they will take this away with them to their future workplaces.

A computer-based learning environment for OSH

The first Finnish computer-based learning environment for OSH, TYVE, was developed by the Tampere University of Technology. TYVE is a web safety course for students offering different, interactive features.
The aim of the TYVE-project was to develop a computer-based learning environment for OSH. The target groups were universities, polytechnic institutes, and students in the Open University. The target group of the learning environment are students with no prior knowledge about OSH. The material was to be made freely available over the Internet.

These studies prepare students for the profession of a safety and occupational hygiene inspector and, after passing the relevant exam, the students acquire the title of internal auditor of OSH management systems.
The students also take part in the training called “Internal Auditor of the Safety and Occupational Hygiene Management System” which is finished by a final test. Those students who pass the test are given a certificate of the Internal Auditor of the Safety and Occupational Hygiene Management Systems, the 'Certificate of postgraduate studies'.
