“Paying Attention Pays”
Youth Employment Educational Outreach Game

In 2001, Paying Attention Pays became Oklahoma’s first-ever child labor program facilitated at schools and youth programs.
In 2002, the Central Oklahoma Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development honoured Paying Attention Pays with the Award of Excellence, the organization’s highest honor. The game was honoured because it used a creative approach at schools to teach students about the labor laws.
In 2003 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paying Attention Pays became the first child labor game presented nationally at an Interstate Labor Standards Association national conference.
In 2006 at the Oklahoma State Capitol, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry honoured Paying Attention Pays with the prestigious Quality Oklahoma Governor’s Commendation of Excellence for being one of the state’s top programs.
In 2007 in Chicago, Illinois, Paying Attention Pays placed second place in the nation in the instructional/training category and was honoured by the National Association of Government Communicators with the prestigious Gold Screen Award for being one of the best training programs in the United States.
In 2009, Paying Attention Pays was featured as a model program in Cable in the Classroom (February 2009), a national magazine out of Washington, D.C. circulated to schools across North America. The article Game To Learn was authored by Jeremy Koester.
A successful partnership between the Labor Department and Education Department enabled Paying Attention Pays to be available to ALL Oklahoma schools. The game was marketed to more than 2,500 school officials statewide. Video-conference sessions were also held to market the game to teachers across the state. With more than 100 school partnerships, more than 750 Paying Attention Pays presentations have been facilitated reaching more than 25,000 students to date. Several colleges and universities have also incorporated the Paying Attention Pays lesson plan into their academic curriculum.
The game material includes the Paying Attention Pays lesson plan and power-point presentation (also available on CD). The Oklahoma Department of Labor has made the game material available on its website at www.labor.ok.gov. The Oklahoma Department of Labor will also send the game material in the mail if requested.
