SAFESTART
basic safety through e-Learning
Learning content

The learning content is based on the existing final attainment levels for the (VCA) certificate. The course is based on full multimedia, makes maximum use of illustrations and animations, interactive exercises and tests, and is fully supported by voice-over audio, all with a view to passing the B-VCA exam. SAFETART is a preparation to this exam.
Coaching
SAFESTART is a learning aid for independent study, as part of blended learning or didactic support for courses in a class-teaching context. Tests with the target groups have yielded positive results if the learning programme is accompanied by sufficient coaching tailored to the age and educational level of the trainee.
Language versions available
The course is available in Dutch, French, English, German and Polish and adapted to standards and prescriptions local to the partner countries of the project.
Origin of SAFESTART
SAFETART is a project staged by Preventie & Interim as part of the European Leonardo Da Vinci programme of the European Union. This programme gives financial support to transnational projects who care for the quality and the innovative force of the vocational education in the participating countries.
SAFESTART and VCA
Non-managerial staff in risk-sector companies must have a basic knowledge of safety and occupational risks on the work place, certainly by high-risk activities. A lot of European companies want their workers to be in possession of a Basic Safety Training Certificate, which can be obtained after passing an examination given by a recognised examination centre. A certificate is required, already today, by companies in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and France. Some companies require basic safety knowledge of their new employees and their contractors' employees in the different EU member states. Discussions are taking place in order to get this certificate recognised at the European level.
Cooperation with other institutions
Some training institutions and official bodies have already undertaken to incorporate Safestart into training programmes, so that further use by the target group is guaranteed. The programme has been presented to the European consultation platform of VCA, in the European employers’ federation and in the working group in the European Advisory Committee for Health and Safety at Work. Since January 2008, Safestart is available on the website of the Flemish Community, i.c. the Department of Education and Training. Via this website, schools can use Safestart for free. The teacher has the opportunity to do a follow-up on the students' progression and students can log in from any location or any computer. This school year 1000 students will have access, as from next school year this number will be increased up to 4000 students.
FOREM (public employment centre of the Walloon Community) will spread Safestart towards jobseekers.
Prevention and Interim
"Prevention and Interim" (PI) is a Belgian non-profit association founded in 1998 having as its main objective the promotion of safety and health of the temporary workers. This central department for prevention has been created in order to become the point of reference for information, advice and initiatives related to the well-being on the workplace of temporary workers.
SAFESTART online is an on-line e-learning course which serves as preparation for the official VCA exam. It covers all the subjects which may come up in the official exam, so that participants are perfectly prepared to take the exam in an approved centre in order to gain the B-VCA certificate.
After registering, the participants will have access to the course for 60 days, which is sufficient time to study all the material. During this period, they will be distance-mentored by an experienced tutor to whom you can address, via e-mail, any questions and comments they may have.
SAFESTART gives them the option of completing exercises and taking a mock exam (at the same level of difficulty as the official exam) as many times as they like!
