Work, method development and evaluations are being pursued within the following areas:

• Secondary prevention within the primary health care
• Educational programmes for the significant others of substance abusers/substance dependent individuals
• Youth prevention – mainly different family-parental programmes
• Alcohol and drug prevention at restaurants and night clubs
• Prevention at workout gymnasiums

STAD paid attention to alcohol prevention within primary healthcare already during the 90ies. Among other things a manual was developed to improve the possibility for physicians and nurses to discuss alcohol with their patients. A patient brochure and a film on Motivational Interviewing technique were distributed. The work also included educational efforts.
Staff on 29 primary healthcare units within Stockholm county council was trained in alcohol facts and motivational interviewing technique in the beginning of the 21st century. This work has been documented and published as a STAD-report.

STAD offers primary healthcare units in Stockholm County Council a possibility to discuss and learn more about secondary prevention of alcohol problems, focusing on problem drinkers in primary health care setting.
