PAPILIO
Preventing Behavioural Disorders and Promoting Social-Emotional Competence in Preschool Children Tackling the Risks for Violence and Addiction

Why prevention in the kindergarten?
The age of onset for experimentation with nicotine and alcohol is currently about 10 years old. Conduct problems emerge during early childhood which can have a negative course and outcome. Socialemotional competences – as important protective factors – develop during the preschool years.
Therefore PAPILIO targets children of between 3 and 7 years in order to foster children’s competences to build an important base for a healthy psychosocial development.

PAPILIO – a three-level program
  • Level 1: PAPILIO for children
    • Module “Toys-go-on-holiday-day”: Once a week children play interactive games without toys to enhance their positive social interactions and social skills.
    • Module “Paula and the trunk pixies”: Children learn to perceive and deal with their own emotions and the emotions of others to foster their emotional competences.
    • Module “Mine-yoursyours-our-game”: Children learn to adhere to social rules in small groups to inhibit behavioural problems and to foster prosocial behaviour.
  • Level 2: PAPILIO for kindergarten teachers
    • qualified training in practicing PAPILIO in kindergartens as a solution to current educational challenges
    • reflection of one´s own educational behaviour and principles of shaping children’s behavior
    • support from PAPILIO trainers
  • Level 3: PAPILIO for parents
    • Information and involvement of parents by means of parent-teacher conferences and the parents-club.

Aims and goals of PAPILIO
| Bild: | PAPILIO supports parents and kindergarten teachers in their demanding task of supporting and helping children to advance.
All PAPILIO interventions are play orientated and suitable for children. They are specifically developed for preschoolers-aged between 3-7.
PAPILIO is continuously integrated into the daily routine by the kindergarten teachers. The kindergarten teachers have a central key role and PAPILIO becomes a matter of course for children.
PAPILIO kindergartens are certificated to demonstrate their quality.

Current status of implementation
As well as the German wide partners, Robert Bosch foundation and Auridis, various ministries, health insurers, welfare organisations and institutions for prevention are involved in the implementation on a federal state level. Contact to the drug delegate of the Federal Government, crime preventive institutions of the police of the federal states and the Federal Government and to the Foundation of welfare work exists.

Current status of project
Since 2005
  • 157 trainers in eleven federal states have been trained by Papilio over periods of several days. They, in turn, have trained
  • 4,620 kindergarten teachers in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, Northrhine-Westfalia, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia
  • 92,400 children have experienced PAPILIO in kindergarten

Quality management takes the form of of coaching, supervision, workshops, newsletter, feedbacks, and quality conferences two times a year for trainers and quality networks for kindergarten teachers.

| Bild: | Since 2006 PAPILIO has organised a German wide campaign to sensitise the public to the theme of early prevention along with the Augsburger Puppenkiste which is an important project partner. The story “Paula and the trunk pixies” has been developed as a book, film and puppet theatre. The program has been presented in 144 cities and about 31,000 children have seen the theatre show. About 20 events will follow in 2012.

Further plans
Development projects for another children's book with the trunk pixies are running, Papilio for kindergardens in districts with higher need for renewal ("social hotspots") and the further involvement of parents ("parent's club"). The themes changeover from kindergarten to elementary school, Papilio for Children under 3 Years (“U3”) and the cooperation with training centers for kindergarten teachers are planned. An implementation from 2012 to 2017 is probable.
