Choose Safety
Pilot project by the HSA
‘Choose Safety’ is a new learning module for second level students. It is primarily aimed at post-Junior Cert students who are likely to engage in a community service or work experience programme during the course of the year. Transition Year, Leaving Cert Applied and Leaving Cert Vocational Programme students will gain most from the module although mainstream students of subjects such as Home Economics, Architectural Technology, Engineering and Science will also benefit.
The ‘Choose Safety’ module is available as a pack consisting of a students’ workbook, a teacher’s guidebook and a DVD.

The module consists of six units:
  1. Accidents Happen (Identifying hazards in the workplace)
  2. Wanna bet? (Considering the risks)
  3. You’ve been warned (Controlling risk)
  4. Not my problem!...Is it? (Looking at responsibility)
  5. Who do I tell? How do I tell? (Communication Skills)
  6. It has happened before (Case Studies)
The module is an approximately 20 hour programme suitable for Transition Year or as a module for the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme or the Leaving Certificate Applied. The lessons may be expanded or condensed to suit the timetabling arrangements in schools and the ability range of students.

The aims of the project are:
  • To identify risks and hazards at workplaces
  • Be able to control risks
  • Overtaking responsibility for the safety of themselves and others
  • Enhance the communication skills of pupils
