65 participants from 11 different countries attended the workshop “OSH and education - approaches to a successful cooperation”, which took place on the 5th November 2009 during the A+A conference in Düsseldorf. The workshop was organised by the European Network Education and Training in Occupational Safety and Health, ENETOSH, in co-operation with the statutory accident insurance for the public sector of North-Rhine Westphalia and the expert group on education of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).

Dr. Gerwin-Lutz Reinink, head of the department for school sport and health promotion of the Ministry for Education and Training of North-Rhine Westphalia put it in a nutshell: at last we are listening to an education specialist on the topic of occupational safety and health and education. How often does that happen?

In his introductory address Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jörg Ruhloff looked at the circumstances under which health and safety can be of educational significance. Sarah Copsey, from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, then described how integration of OSH into education and training can best be promoted in Europe.

In a practical forum consisting of eight separate thematic stands, participants had an opportunity to discuss national and international examples of successful cooperation between the fields of OSH and education. The range included integrative approaches to promoting health and safety in general and vocational schools as well as universities, examples of cooperation between ministries and between the social partners, a national educational program for promoting safety and an international comparison of health promotion in schools.

Leading representatives from the policy fields of safety, health and education formulated the core messages drawn up by the thematic stands and rounded the session off with recommendations on how cooperation within and between the various policy areas they represented could be improved.

The atmosphere in the workshop was one of openness and mutual interest, and there was a general consensus that promoting health and safety in kindergartens, schools and universities was of crucial importance for developing a culture of prevention.
