Safe School
And awareness of risks and health issues is essential, in later work-life as well as in school. Health and safety have to become normal, intuitive to our children, so we can be sure they will mind these problems all their lifetime. All parents and teachers want their children and pupils to be safe at school. The following projects focus safety at school, for teachers and trainers as well as for the children themselves.

National Healthy School Standard (NHSS) (United Kingdom)

The National Healthy Schools Programme is an exciting long term initiative that helps young people and their schools to be healthy. The programme makes a difference to the health and achievement of young people in thousands of schools across England.

Källby Gård - Safe school (Sweden)

Källby Gård is a comprehensive school with children from 1 to 12 years old. The school was the first in the world to be awarded the title of safe and secure school, according to the criteria set up by the WHO, on the 24th November 2003. The school has been a model for work with accident prevention.

¡A salvo! (Safe) (Spain)

The “¡ A salvo!” (Safe!) campaign directed at primary education students aged from 6 to 12 years in all schools in Castilla y León and was developed to increase awareness and attention to safety in children. Its objective was to create a new preventive culture by acting from the first stages of education to promote awareness that safety is socially desirable and must be defended by all, and by promoting an attitude change that contributes to the development of health and safety habits for all and benefits everyone.

On this website of the RGUVV, children, pupils and other visitors can click through a unique virtual model of a school or a kindergarten. Users can find out a lot about safety, risks and technical details.

Safety in the Classroom – Prevention Programme (Italy)

A training (experimental and free of charge) project on safety in the primary school's classes of Cureggio (NOVARA).
Two meetings were held for each working group. The meetings began in january. Each class is supported by the teacher (Safety trainer) while drafting an assessment document called the “Safety Exercise Book”. In order to achieve the set targets, the description of the classroom hazard assessment as well as the report of behavioursthat are measured are all included in the Exercise Book".

Bezpecna Komunita - "Safe community" (Czech Republic)

In April 2005, the primary school Zachar Kroměřiž in the Czech Republic was announced International Safe School. The programme International Safe Schools is a part of larger movement the World Health Organisation Safe Community movement, formally started in 1989 and located at the WHO Centre Community Safety Promotion in Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

“Safe School with PZU” (Poland)

“Safe School with PZU” is organized under the patronage of the Ministry of National Education and Sport, National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Main Police Command, and Onet.pl. Experts from those institutions worked out materials which would be easy to understand for pupils. “Safe School with PZU” is the only campaign in Poland realized on so large scale and engaging so many institutions and people.

This cd-rom is intended for schools and is aimed at helping teachers and school directors to comply with Art. 22 of Law Decree 626/94, concerning the training on occupational safety and health for those students involved in School-Work Alternation projects.

The general purpose of the research was to develop a culture of health and safety (on the roads, at home, at school and in the local area) in schools in a certain area. This project - created by the Department of Prevention at the Community Preventive Medical Service (SMPdC) of the Bergamo ASL (Local Health Agency) and by the Department of Documentation, Information and Training at ISPESL (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Prevention) - has organized for public health operators to provide support for teachers in order to contribute to and provide orientation for the choices of curriculum and method.

Development of the “Education to Safety” through the adoption of proper behaviours. The project is carried out by Tele2 (Italy) during the curricular activity and provides informations activities, exercises including the actions to be taken in the event of a danger and video watching.

International Safe Schools (USA)

International Safe Schools is part of a larger movement, the World Health Organization Safe Community movement. Formally started in 1989 and located at the WHO Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion in Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm Sweden. Most of their programs took place in the United States, however, many of European countries is also involved in this campaign.

Project “SAFE SCHOOL” (Italy)

The project, included in the Italian P.O.F. (Programme for the Supply of Training Courses) communication/integration area, is addressed to the 950 students attending the schools of the I.C. (Istituto Comprensivo) in overcrowded classrooms, with poorly suitable spaces. The project aims at developing the safety and prevention culture among them.

Safe in our own school (Italy)

Project of the Istituto superiore per la prevenzione e la sicurezza del lavoro – ISPESL. To be aware of dangers at school, home and in the workplace and to behave properly in emergency situations. The school, being the authority in charge of education par excellence, shall take the burden for the education to the Civil Protection, which is a pivotal aspect in personal education .
